Young people have been voting and it’s because the Student PIRGs and other youth-organizing groups have turning young people out to vote for every election. And, we can’t stop! The elections in November are important and the people elected will make decisions about issues we care about, like jobs, the economy, college affordability and the environment.

Unfortunately, civic engagement among young people in the Southwest, especially students of color, is unacceptably low. In Texas in 2010, Latino voter turnout was roughly half that of non-Hispanic Texans. Southwestern states all rank near the bottom for youth voter turnout levels (Texas ranks 48th, New Mexico ranks 43rd and Arizona ranks 45th). In 2010, the last interim elections, only 29 percent of young people voted in Texas, as compared to over 70 percent of older voters. In addition to low levels of voter turnout, young Texans rank among the lowest in the nation for all metrics of civic participation, including voter registration, contacting elected officials, and participating in volunteer opportunities.

That’s why TexPIRG, New Mexico PIRG and Student PIRGs are working to make sure that students turn out to the polls in a big way in the Southwest on Election Day, so we can raise our voice on the issues we care about. Together we can make a difference.

For forty years, the Student PIRGs have built a legacy of recruiting, training, and inspiring young people to engage in democracy. We believe that for our democracy to work, young people need to be engaged. And the first step to engaging young people is exercising their voice at the polls. The Student PIRGs’ New Voters Project is the largest non-partisan, on-the-ground young voter mobilization effort in the nation. Since 1984, we have helped to register more than 1.7 million young voters and made over one million personalized get-out-the-vote contacts.

The New Voters Project Campus Organizers will:

 Run a non-partisan voter registration and turnout campaign in a campus community. Campus Organizers recruit and train a cadre of volunteers to register 18-29 year olds, collect pledges to vote from 18-29 year olds who are already registered to vote, and contact all of these young people to turn out to vote on Election Day.

 Educate students and train new leaders. Campus Organizers teach citizenship and organizing skills. Campus Organizers also oversee an internship program, through which students can earn academic course credit for their work to boost youth voter engagement.

 Build a coalition. Campus Organizers work with student volunteers and interns to build a diverse, invested coalition of organizations and people, such as the student government, college president, College Republicans, College Democrats and others, to boost youth voter turnout.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate has strong in-person communication skills and experience with grassroots organizing tactics such as petitioning, phone-calling, or canvassing. Leadership experience with campus groups or student government is a plus. Applicants should be driven by the idea of working on a huge, non-partisan youth voter mobilization project, capable of taking on leadership, and ready to work 50-70 hour weeks. We are looking for a commitment through November 2014.

Salary & Training: Recent college graduates earn $24,500 in their first year on staff. In addition, full-time staff can opt into our state health care coverage, are eligible for paid sick and vacation days, and can apply for our college loan

assistance program. Our staff accrues two weeks of vacation by the end of their first year and three weeks by the end of their second year. Staff are also eligible to join our 401(k) program in their second year.
