Electrification is the future’: TexPIRG video urges Austin transit to commit to 100 percent electric buses

Electric buses are cool, new and beautiful—but are they affordable?

Electric buses are cool, new and beautiful—but are they affordable?

On Oct. 30, TexPIRG State Director Bay Scoggin stood in front of an electric bus in Austin and announced the release of our network’s “Paying for Electric Buses” report. He urged Austin’s transit agency, CapMetro, which has already announced its plan to buy 40 electric buses, to commit to switching to 100 percent electric buses by 2030.

“Electrification is the future,” said Scoggin. “Electric buses are here. The technology is ready to go. It’s already on the streets across the nation. CapMetro is poised to be the leader on this issue in the state.”

TexPIRG and our national network have provided the framework for how transit agencies and school districts across the country can fund the switch to 100 percent electric buses. They may be a higher investment in the beginning, but over a bus’s lifetime, transit agencies can save $400,000 and school districts can save $170,000.
