Some Good, Some Bad in Obama Executive Order on Protecting Antibiotics

Today, President Barack Obama issued an Executive Order – Combating Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria. While the order takes several important steps necessary to control the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, it misses the opportunity to call for critical reforms in the agricultural sector that are essential to protect public health.

Oil Refineries Pose Unnecessary Security Risk to 1.9 Million People in Texas

Oil refineries needlessly put 1.9 million people in Texas at risk of injury or death in the event of an accident or deliberate attack, according to a new report documenting the major threat posed by refineries using hydrofluoric acid. In the wake of recent explosions at Texas chemical plants, the Texas Public Interest Research Group (TexPIRG) called upon the facilities, starting with BP’s Texas City refinery, to immediately switch to safer alternatives that could reduce or eliminate the threat.

Hard-Fought Texas Identity Theft Prevention Laws At Risk

Texas has been an early leader in the fight to prevent identity theft, but tough laws adopted in recent years are being threatened by an industry effort to preempt the standards at the federal law, warned a consumer advocacy group today. Senator Hutchison (R-TX) and other members of the Senate Commerce committee will vote on the proposal on Thursday.

TexPIRG Applauds Governor Perry’s Signing of Canadian Prescription Drugs Bill

The Texas Public Interest Research Group (TexPIRG) applauded Governor Rick Perry today for signing into law a measure to give Texans easier and safer access to prescription drugs from Canadian pharmacies. SB 410, which authorizes the continuation of the state pharmacy board, included an amendment that directs the state pharmacy board to inspect and designate pharmacies in Canada as reliable vendors of prescription drugs. In addition, the law calls for the state to create and maintain a website to educate consumers on drug availability and pricing from designated pharmacies.

Beginning June 1, consumers living in Texas and other southern states will have the right to order a free copy of their credit report thanks to a new federal law, known as the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act, or FACTA, adopted by Congress in 2003.
