Statement from Melissa Cubria, Director
“TexPIRG applauds Congressman Lloyd Doggett’s efforts to address the high cost of prescription drugs. As skyrocketing drug costs place more and more pressure on family budgets, it is just common sense for the National Institutes of Health and other regulators to use the tools theyalready have to address the problem. These tools include measures to strengthen price competition when costs become prohibitive to the point of endangering the health and safety of patients.
“The high cost of prescription drugs has been a perennial concern for Texas consumers. Rising prescription drug costs burden all Texans through rising health insurance premiums, rising costs for businesses, and a growing burden on state and federal budgets. In recent years, a new crop of life-changing yet extraordinarily expensive specialty drugs have come on the market, bringing new urgency to the issue.
“TexPIRG has long supported stronger action from state and federal policymakers to address the root causes of rising prescription drug costs. We urge federal regulators to take immediate action to implement Congressman Doggett’s recommendations. The lives of Texas consumers depend on it.”
