AUSTIN — Today, Gov. Greg Abbott issued a mask mandate for Texans living in counties with 20 or more positive COVID-19 cases. Lauren Banister, TexPIRG Public Interest Associate, issued the following statement in response to this decision.

“We applaud the Governor for taking this difficult, but critically important, step. The science is clear that wearing a mask will save lives. Texans take care of one another, even when it’s uncomfortable. We wear the mask not for ourselves, but for Texas. A clear, statewide requirement from the Governor demonstrates that Texan’s must work together to contain the spread of the coronavirus.”

“Cases in Texas continue to rise, hospitals are reaching dangerous capacity levels and we continue to stray from the CDC benchmarks for COVID-19 containment. Gov. Abbott should continue to implement new measures to improve containment, testing and tracing of COVID-19”
