Credit Freezes: How to Prevent New Account Identity Theft

Defense against any kind of identity theft starts with vigilance about protecting your personal information by taking steps such as creating secure passwords, keeping your social security number private, and shredding personal documents.

However, if and when someone does steal your information, there are a variety of ways it can be used, depending on what was taken. One of those uses is known as new account identity theft, where someone opens a new account in your name and then proceeds to rack up a ton of debt. New account identity theft is the most preventable kind of identity theft and can be prevented by getting security freezes, also known as credit freezes.

Letter to CFPB & FTC on Experian/T-Mobile Data Breach

Following a breach of a subsidiary of the nationwide credit bureau Experian affecting 15 million customers and applicants of T-Mobile, a number of state PIRGs have joined other leading privacy and consumer groups in a request for investigations by the CFPB and FTC.

Leading Groups Send Criteria for Evaluating VW Settlement

The letter highlights six main criteria by which a proposal should be evaluated to compensate consumers and the environment and deter future criminal acts. Four leading consumer, environmental, and public health organizations wrote an open letter in advance of the April 21st deadline set by U.S. District Judge Charles R. Breyer for a proposal that deals with Volkswagen’s emission scandal.
