State representative facing ethics questions

In what appears to be a clear-cut ethics violations by a longtime state legislator, Bay Scoggin, TexPIRG Director highlights how there is no way for State Rep. Jim Murphy to represent his constituents as a taxpayer-funded representative and a taxpayer-funded lobbyist at the same time.

TexPIRG 2018 Program Agenda

TexPIRG is a consumer group that stands up to powerful interests whenever they threaten our health and safety, our financial security, or our right to fully participate in our democratic society.

For decades, we’ve stood up for consumers, countering the influence of big banks, insurers, chemical manufacturers and other powerful special interests.

Our team of researchers uncover the facts; our staff bring our findings to the public, through the media as well as one-on-one interactions; and our advocates are bringing the voice of the public to the halls of power on behalf of consumers.

TexPIRG’s mission is to deliver consistent, result-oriented public interest activism that protects consumers, encourages a fair, sustainable economy, and fosters responsive, democratic government.

Governor should stop name calling and start supporting our leaders on ethics

AUSTIN—After the House Committee on General Investigating and Ethics met on new ethics legislation, TexPIRG director Bay Scoggin released the following statement.

"It's simple, if the Governor was serious about ethics reform, he would add it to the special session. Name calling Representatives who take important leadership positions isn't a good way to do business."

"We applaud Chairman Davis and Rep. Larson for being leaders on this issue. Texans deserve the government they were promised: for the people and by the people. It's only by supporting our champions in the Legislature that we will realize that dream once again."

Continued Inaction on Ethics Endangers Interests of Everyday Texans

By | Bay Scoggin
State Director, TexPIRG

Abuse of power at the highest level of Texas government should concern all citizens as their deliberative process and representation is corrupted. Normalizing this behavior or allowing this to continue unchecked can only serve to move politics from the hands of voters to powerful interests and personalities.

Giving more Americans a greater voice in our elections

In our democracy, the size of your wallet shouldn’t determine the volume of your voice. In 2015, we helped win reforms in Maine and Seattle to ensure that more Americans have a greater say in our elections. Seattle’s Initiative-122 empowers small donors with “democracy vouchers” that can be donated to local candidates and lowers the cap on contributions. In Maine, the state’s Clean Elections Act was improved by strengthening campaign finance disclosure laws and offering qualifying candidates increased public funding.
