When it comes to health care, American small business owners are getting a raw deal. While the current insurance marketplace offers some options to larger employers, it too often leaves small business owners on the outside looking in. They face unpredictable changes in costs, and far too often they are forced to choose between covering employees and the very survival of their businesses.

New Study Finds 42% of American are underinsured

A study released today by the Commonwealth Fund found that 42% of Americans either are uninsured or underinsured. According to the study, “More than half of the underinsured (53%) and two-thirds of the uninsured (68%) went without needed care—including not seeing a doctor when sick, not filling prescriptions, and not following up on recommended tests or treatment.”

TexPIRG Applauds Governor Perry’s Signing of Canadian Prescription Drugs Bill

The Texas Public Interest Research Group (TexPIRG) applauded Governor Rick Perry today for signing into law a measure to give Texans easier and safer access to prescription drugs from Canadian pharmacies. SB 410, which authorizes the continuation of the state pharmacy board, included an amendment that directs the state pharmacy board to inspect and designate pharmacies in Canada as reliable vendors of prescription drugs. In addition, the law calls for the state to create and maintain a website to educate consumers on drug availability and pricing from designated pharmacies.

Survey Finds Uninsured San Antonians Pay Too High a Price for Prescription Drugs

Uninsured San Antonians are charged 70 percent more for prescription drugs than the best available market prices, according to a survey released today by TexPIRG. The group criticized the failure of Congress to enact adequate reforms, and called on the Texas Legislature to take action to make affordable prescription drugs available to uninsured residents.
